Keep the account open until Barclays pays the bonus. U.S. savers need about six months, and U.K.
switchers must stay open to payment day for £150 and six months for £300. A current account is the U.K. name for day-to-day checking. The timing rule is different by country because the products and bonuses are different.

Why There Is No U.S. Checking Timeline
Barclays Bank Delaware does not offer a consumer checking account in the United States. FinanceBuzz reports in its FinanceBuzz review of Barclays online savings that U.S. products are online savings accounts and certificates of deposit, plus credit cards.
That means U.S. bonus hunters are really chasing a savings bonus. LendEDU gives the same product list in its 2026 review, with no checking for U.S. customers.
How Long U.S. Savers Must Wait
The current U.S. savings bonus needs $25,000 for $200 or $40,000 for $400 deposited within 30 days of opening.
The customer must then maintain that balance for 120 consecutive days. FinanceBuzz explains in its FinanceBuzz bank-promotions roundup that the bonus is paid about 60 days after qualification. Funding plus the 120-day hold plus payout means roughly six months open in total.
When Can U.K. Switchers Close After £150?
The U.K. checking equivalent is the Barclays Bank Account current account. Barclays states on its Barclays switch-offer page that its switch offer from 1 October 2026 pays up to £300 to new customers using the Current Account Switch Service.
MoneyfactsCompare reports the first £150 needs a sole account opened in the Barclays app, a full switch with at least three active direct debits, and at least £2,000 salary paid in within 30 days. Be Clever With Your Cash reports Barclays pays that £150 within 28 working days as Switch Reward. The account must still be open on the payment date or the bonus is lost.
- Open a sole account in the Barclays app
- Complete a full switch with three active direct debits
- Pay in at least £2,000 salary within 30 days
- Keep the account open on the payment date
How Long for the Full £300?
The other £150 comes more slowly. Which? reports in its Which? switching-deals roundup that Barclays pays £30 per month for five months.
Each monthly payment needs at least £2,000 paid in and at least 10 eligible debit-card payments that month. Missing the pay-in or spending rule stops that month's £30, so the full £300 needs about six months open.
