Open a Bank Account Without a ChexSystems Check
ChexSystems is a consumer reporting agency that tracks your banking history. If you have been denied a bank account because of a negative ChexSystems report — from a past overdraft, unpaid fees, or an involuntarily closed account — you are not out of options. Many banks, credit unions, and fintech companies either do not use ChexSystems at all or offer accounts specifically designed for people with banking history issues.
This page lists every bank and financial institution that offers accounts without a ChexSystems check, plus guidance on understanding, disputing, and clearing your ChexSystems report.
What Is ChexSystems?
ChexSystems is operated by Fidelity National Information Services (FIS) and maintains records on consumer banking behavior. When you apply for a new checking or savings account, most banks query your ChexSystems report to assess risk. The report includes:
- Involuntary account closures — Accounts closed by the bank due to overdrafts, unpaid fees, or suspected fraud
- Unpaid negative balances — Money owed to a bank from overdrafts, bounced checks, or unpaid fees
- Suspected fraud — Any fraud flags associated with your banking history
- Account application inquiries — A record of banks that have checked your report
Negative items typically remain on your ChexSystems report for 5 years from the date reported, though some items may be removed earlier if resolved.
Banks and Credit Unions That Don’t Use ChexSystems
Online Banks Without ChexSystems
Several online banks and fintech companies do not use ChexSystems to screen account applicants. These are often the easiest accounts to open if you have ChexSystems issues:
- Chime — No ChexSystems check, no monthly fees, no minimum balance. Offers early direct deposit and a secured credit card for building credit
- Varo Bank — No ChexSystems screening, no fees, competitive savings rate. FDIC-insured as a chartered bank
- Current — No ChexSystems, fee-free overdraft protection up to $200, early direct deposit
- GO2bank — No ChexSystems check, available at retail locations, offers a secured credit card
- Ally Bank — Uses a soft ChexSystems check (for informational purposes) but is generally more lenient than traditional banks
Second Chance Checking Accounts
Some traditional banks offer specific “second chance” or “fresh start” checking accounts designed for people with ChexSystems issues. These accounts have fewer features than standard checking but give you a path to rebuild your banking history. See our dedicated Second Chance Checking Accounts guide for details.
Credit Unions Without ChexSystems
Many credit unions are more lenient than national banks when reviewing ChexSystems reports. Some credit unions offer second-chance accounts or use alternative screening methods. Community-based credit unions in particular may be willing to work with applicants who have negative ChexSystems marks.
How to Check Your ChexSystems Report
You are entitled to one free ChexSystems consumer report every 12 months under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). To request your report:
- Visit the ChexSystems website and submit a report request online
- Or call ChexSystems at 1-800-428-9623
- Or mail a written request to ChexSystems, Attn: Consumer Relations, 7805 Hudson Road, Suite 100, Woodbury, MN 55125
Review your report carefully for errors. Common errors include accounts that were closed and settled but still show as unpaid, duplicate entries, and accounts that belong to someone else.
How to Dispute ChexSystems Errors
If you find inaccurate information on your ChexSystems report, you have the right to dispute it:
- File a dispute with ChexSystems — Submit your dispute online, by phone, or by mail. Include documentation supporting your claim (paid-in-full letters, bank statements, account closure confirmations)
- ChexSystems investigates — They have 30 days to investigate and respond to your dispute
- Dispute directly with the bank — You can also contact the bank that reported the negative item and ask them to update or remove it. If you have paid the debt, ask for a goodwill deletion
- Pay outstanding debts — Settling unpaid balances does not automatically remove the ChexSystems entry, but it changes the status to “paid” which some banks view more favorably
How to Rebuild Your Banking History
- Open a no-ChexSystems account — Start with one of the banks listed above to establish a positive current banking relationship
- Manage the account responsibly — Avoid overdrafts, keep the account in good standing, and maintain it for at least 12 months
- Resolve old debts — Pay any outstanding balances owed to previous banks. Get written confirmation that the debt is satisfied
- Wait for items to age off — ChexSystems entries expire after 5 years. Combined with responsible banking behavior, this gives you a clean slate
- Apply for a standard account — After 12 to 24 months of good history with a no-ChexSystems account, try applying at a traditional bank. Having a current positive account demonstrates responsible banking
